Student Advocacy at Cal Poly
Student Advocacy at Cal Poly
A legislative portfolio of student advocacy work focused on shared governance, academic policy, institutional growth, and student representation.
Executive Summary
Associated Students, Inc. (ASI) is Cal Poly’s student-governed nonprofit auxiliary and the official voice of the student body. As an elected student representative on the ASI Board of Directors, I authored and co-authored legislation addressing institutional growth, shared governance, student representation, academic policy, and organizational structure.
This page summarizes selected resolutions I helped advance through ASI. Together, these items reflect my approach to advocacy: translating student concerns into formal policy language, building coalitions with student and institutional partners, and using governance processes to shape decisions that affect the student experience.
Advocacy Highlights
- Authored and co-authored formal student government legislation on academic policy, institutional decision-making, and governance reform.
- Advanced student perspectives through resolutions directed toward university administrators, Academic Senate processes, and ASI corporate governance.
- Used policy writing, stakeholder communication, and board process to turn student concerns into actionable recommendations.

Methods & Approach
My legislative work began with identifying issues where student perspectives needed clearer representation in formal decision-making. From there, I worked with co-authors, student leaders, faculty, staff, and administrators to understand the relevant governance context, draft policy language, and build support before board consideration.
This work required balancing advocacy with institutional fluency. Strong resolutions needed to be principled enough to communicate student priorities, specific enough to guide action, and collaborative enough to move through shared governance structures productively.
